Zhangjiagang city, long known for its beautiful scenery, pocketed another national award on Oct 31, when it was awarded the title of National Ecological Garden City by the Chinese government.

The National Ecological Garden City title was created in 1992 and is the highest honor a Chinese city can receive for its urban living environment. Zhangjiagang, a beautiful city in Jiangsu province, is one of only four cities to make the grade in 2017.

Zhangjiagang has long striven to promote the construction of infrastructure and sustainable projects. Numerous shelter forests, wetland parks and ecological towns have been built to improve rural and urban living conditions. The city's green coverage has improved considerably, reaching 40 percent in 2016, which has helped improve the city's air quality.

Zhangjiagang has increased the number of public bicycles available in the city and organized a series of green activities to promote green shopping, green buildings and green transportation, creating a healthier and safer living environment.

The other three cities in 2017 to make the list are Hangzhou, Zhejiang province; Changshu, Jiangsu Province; and Xuchang, Henan province.
